UP AIT Holds Heritage Tourism Forum: From the Ground Up
On 23 September 2026, the UP Asian Institute of Tourism hosted the ‘Heritage Tourism Forum: From the Ground and Up.’ The event featured MSTDM graduate students who are active practitioners across various industry sectors.
The forum focused on heritage tourism in the Philippines, highlighting presentations on community-led heritage protection on Tabawan Island, adaptive reuse and living heritage in Iloilo City, and the preservation and transformation of historic structures in Cebu City.
The forum also included insights from international academics. Dr. Sandeep Walia shared perspectives on reimagining heritage tourism in India, emphasizing the shift from traditional dates and monuments toward storytelling and immersive experiences tailored for digitally native, experience-hungry younger generations. Additionally, Dr. Hamza Muzaini from the National University of Singapore discussed heritage tourism and decolonization, stressing the balance between heritage preservation, modernization, and tourism development.
