UP AIT Holds Inaugural ‘Tourism on Point’ Lecture Series
On 1 October 2026, the UP Asian Institute of Tourism hosted the inaugural Tourism on Point Lecture Series, titled ‘Strengthening Destination Governance: Connecting Tourism Policies and Local Practices.’ The lecture brought together three distinguished speakers to examine the critical role of destination governance in Philippine tourism.
Dr. Ebinezer R. Florano from UP NCPAG discussed policy and institutional frameworks, emphasizing that good governance is the true yardstick of any destination while highlighting the ‘problem of many hands,’ where overlapping agency responsibilities often obscure accountability. Dr. Jomelyn Abuan, Municipal Tourism Officer of Montalban, Rizal, shared insights on translating policy into local action, stressing the need to shift from passive consultation to active community empowerment while breaking down departmental silos. Dr. Ramon Benedicto A. Alampay from UP AIT underscored that ‘all tourism is local’ and that governance is not the sole responsibility of the government, illustrating his points with successful collaborative models from Palompon, Isabela City (Basilan), and Iloilo City.
Through these diverse perspectives, the forum underscored that sustainable tourism growth relies on transparent policies, strong local engagement, and active multi-stakeholder collaboration across all levels of governance.
