The UPAIT GAD Advocacy Committee held a public virtual talk on “Usapang Karapatan (AIT GAD Ep. 4): Fight for LGBTQIA+ Rights as Human Rights Struggle” on June 5, 2023.
Diliman Gender Office Coordinator Anna Myrisha Villanueva gave the opening remarks at the said event.
Mmsh. Jeff Crisostomo, an LGBTQIA+ activist and current Akbayan Party communications director, discussed the significance of LGBTQ rights. As part of the presentation, they discussed the history and key aspects of SOGIE Equality Bill. As mentioned in their talk, “The rights of the LGBTQ+ individuals are human rights because they are entitled to the same fundamental rights and freedoms as every other human being.”
Ms. Chloe Tamayao, an alumna of the UPAIT, shared her undergraduate thesis entitled “Travels of the Filipina Transgender Woman: An Exploratory Study on the Problems They Face”. In their undergraduate study, it is reflected that a lack of sensitivity and education for transgender women is a major cause of discrimination.
