Incumbent Dean Miguela Mena

Incumbent AIT Dean, Dr. Miguela Mena, came out as the uncontested nominee for the AIT Deanship in a public forum held at the AIT Seminar Room yesterday.  The majority present in the fully-packed forum were AIT students of all levels, staff, REPS, and faculty, as well as the Nomination Committee composed of the Deans of the College of Home Economics, College of Social Work and Community Development, College of Education, and the UP Asian Center.  Since there were no other nominees aside from the Dean, Dr. Mena, presented the state of the Institute as well as her future plans for the succeeding three years of her renewed post.

In her address of the current state of the Institute, she mentioned the difficulties of her start as the Institute's dean due to the lack of transition and endorsements from the previous administration.  She then reported the accomplishments and achievements of the Institute during her term.

"We will continue AIT's vision to become a world-class provider of human tourism capital not just in the Philippines but in South East Asia", Dean Mena affirmed.  This was also mentioned in AIT's Strategic Plan, in which its formulation was one of the most important highlights of the incumbent dean's accomplishments.

One of the pressing matters that Dean Mena mentioned in her presentation is the low number of incoming enrolees at AIT.  Despite the Bachelor of Science in Tourism as the third most popular choice applied by UPCAT takers as the preferred course at UP, the Institute eventually becomes only able to accept a very low number of entrants according to Dean Mena.  A high number of incoming students becomes an important plus factor especially for the institution of AIT's Master's Degree programs.

As Dean Mena mentioned, the major plans in the next three years include the full establishment of the career-oriented Master's in Tourism Development and Management and the academe-aimed Master's of Science in Tourism Development and Management; the revitalization of the existing AIT building; the strengthening of AIT's research and extension services; continuous betterment of its courses; and raising the awareness of AIT as a significant Institute within the ASEAN Region.

After her presentation was a question period where several students, faculty members, as well as some from the Nomination Committee members posed questions significant to the Institute and its impacts to the tourism industry in general.

Asst. Prof. Paolo Fresnoza speaks his mind

In the afternoon, several students, administrative staff, and faculty were interviewed by the Nomination Committee as part of the deanship search process.

The Dean's position normally takes three years per administration and may be extended for another three upon re-election.
