Organizing PRCTH 2018 is driven by the dramatic and sensational fortunes of Boracay Island. Acknowledged by local and international media as one of the world’s best beaches, it was nonetheless declared as a cesspool by the president of the republic which consequently led to an executive decision to close the island from tourism activities for six months as it aims to recover from a “state of calamity”

Within academic circles, destinations experiencing the strain of tourism is said to be experiencing overtourism. Such negative impacts have been discussed in literature thirty to forty years ago. In the recent years, there has been a renewed interest on topic related to negative impacts of tourism. While there have been local research on these issues, contextualizing these topics to overtourism opens huge opportunities to examine issues, contribute to knowledge development and policy making.
