Highlights of the 2017 Philippine Research Conference on Tourism and Hospitality

The recently concluded Philippine Research Conference on Tourism and Hospitality was a big success, thanks to the active support and participation of over thirty schools, including a number of local and international academic institutions. Held from November 26 to 28, the conference proper took place at the Richmonde Hotel in Quezon City, while the familiarization tour for participants was conducted in the neighboring municipality of Angono, Rizal. The event was organized by the UP Asian Institute of Tourism and the UP College of Home Economics and was made possible by the Department of Tourism.


Here are some of the event highlights:

On day 1, DOT Undersecretary Benito Bengzon delivered a keynote speech on the importance of NTO collaboration within ASEAN on tourism development planning.

Professor Tom Baum of the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom, delivered a talk on collaboration in human resources and sustainability.

In one of the parallel sessions, Asst. Prof. Marical Badilla of UP Asian Institute of Tourism presented her paper on online destination marketing of ASEAN as a single destination.

Students from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran presented their paper on a comprehensive documentation and resident perception on the the conservation of Baile Delos Arcos in Sampiro, Makati.

A research collaboration among Prof. Jung Kyu Lee from Shinhan University, Wan Go Lee from Hanyang University and Prof. Edieser Dela Santa of the University of the Philippines Diliman.

On Day 2, participants were treated to a show of traditional Filipino folk music courtesy of the UP Kontra Gapi.

Professor Robert Rogerson from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom shared a keynote address on collaboration in tourism-oriented future cities.

A panel discussion on the Philippine Hotel Classification System was held in the afternoon of Day 2, headed by Director Rica Bueno of the Department of Tourism.

The discussants on the topic are Prof. Vicki Nañagas of Asia Pacific College and Ms. Charmielyn Cabigas-Sy of the UP Asian Institute of Tourism.

Dean Edieser Dela Santa delivered the closing remarks.
